Naomi Weinberger, adjunct professor of International Affairs at Columbia, joins “News All Day” to provide some historical context to what is happening in Israel and why it’s happening.
She has expertise in Middle East security and is researching Palestinian security sector reform.
Weinberger says that a critical moment occurred in 2005 when Israel “unilaterally withdrew from Gaza hoping that, that would usher in a period of relative stability. Shortly after that, Hamas won Parliamentary elections.”
She says this round of fighting is distinguished from earlier ones because Hamas did not show restraint this time.
In addition, the civilian hostages make this fight more complicated for Israel.
