Thousands of tenants enrolled in the city’s housing voucher program could soon face a rent hike under a new plan by the Adams administration.
The proposal would require households receiving CityFHEPS vouchers to pay 40% of their income toward rent when they reach six years in the program. That’s up from the current rate of 30%.
The city says this will help manage the rising costs of the program, but advocates argue this only increases the risk of families being unable to pay their rents and become homeless.
Meanwhile, state lawmakers have approved a four-year pilot of a new housing voucher access program in the budget.
Former City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who serves as the president and CEO of the nonprofit Win, joined “Inside City Hall” Thursday to discuss the pilot and the proposal.
