Mayor Eric Adams Tuesday joined a chorus of New York officials calling on Amtrak to abandon its plans to close the East River tunnels for repairs.
The years-long project would repair two of the four East River tunnels damaged during Hurricane Sandy.
The tunnels link Manhattan to Queens and are a vital commuter artery for the more than 125,000 New Yorkers who rely on Long Island Railroad service through those tunnels daily.
Amtrak’s plan would fully close one tunnel at a time, leaving three operating — a margin of error some New York officials say is too thin.
Officials who typically don’t agree on anything are urging Amtrak to instead carry out construction on nights and weekends — preventing full tunnel closures — the same way the L train East River tunnel was fixed in 2019.
Amtrak, however, says full repairs are needed, and would give the tunnels new life for the next century.
Laura Mason, the executive vice president of Capital Delivery at Amtrak, joined “Inside City Hall” Tuesday to discuss the issue.
