The city’s “Summer Streets” program will feature more than 22 miles of car-free streets this year, including a car-free route stretching from the top to the bottom of Manhattan, officials said Tuesday.
The initiative, which clears miles of city streets of cars for residents to play, walk and bike, will kick off at 7 a.m. and run until 3 p.m. on five Saturdays in July and August, Mayor Eric Adams and Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said in a release.
This year marks the first time New Yorkers will be able to travel the length of Manhattan — from Brooklyn Bridge to Inwood — on a car-free stretch, the release said.
The program will also debut a new route along Forest Avenue on Staten Island, along with two free community races in partnership with New York Road Runners, the release noted.
The races will be held in Queens and Brooklyn on Saturday, July 26 and Saturday, Aug. 23, according to the release. Registration is expected to open later in the month.
“This summer, ‘We Outside,’ and we’re bringing everyone with us,” Adams said in a statement. “From the Brooklyn Bridge to Inwood — and across all five boroughs — New Yorkers will have more space than ever to walk, bike, run, and connect with their neighbors in their communities at our Summer Streets events.”
