ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Penfield Central School District says counselors are being made available on Monday for students mourning the loss of a classmate over the weekend.

Officers responded to Chestnut Street in Rochester just after midnight on Saturday for a report of a pedestrian struck. The victim, identified as Matthew Bittner, 16, was taken to a local hospital by ambulance with life-threatening injuries, police say.

The Penfield High School junior died from his injuries on Sunday.

Investigators say a 39-year-old Rochester man was arrested for driving while ability impaired and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation. The driver's name has not yet been released.

The incident is still under investigation and the driver could face additional charges, according to authorities.
