OHIO — Members of the Ohio National Guard will soon deploy overseas to help with Operation Spartan Shield, which is a mission that focuses on U.S. military operations in the Middle East.

The deployment includes 160 members of the 1487th Transportation Company, based in Piqua, Ohio, according to a Facebook post from the Ohio National Guard. 

According to the National Guard, Operation Spartan Shield is a U.S. Central Command contingency operation in the Middle East that "promotes security, enhances readiness and strengthens the ability to rapidly respond."

The Ohio National Guard said while overseas, this team will provide transportation assets and support to other units. 

It's the fourth deployment for the 1487th Transportation Company unit. Previous years of deployment were 2004-2005, 2012-2013 and 2020-2021, according to the Ohio National Guard. 

There will be a "call to duty ceremony" for the soldiers being deployed on Thursday at 2 p.m. at Piqua High School.
