What You Need To Know

  • UofL Health's Brown Cancer Center has introduced the Mobile Mammography Unit
  • The van is a medical office on wheels, equipped with the latest technology for accurate and timely breast cancer screening
  • Screenings take about 15 to 20 minutes

  • The goal is to ensure women get screened for breast cancer and make screenings more accessible

“As women, we are busy," said Pam Temple, cancer control specialist for the Kentucky Cancer Program. "We run the household; we take care of the kids. We're trying to work. We're doing all the shopping, cleaning, and women don't take care of ourselves."

"We say we're going to, but we take care of everybody else."

That's where the UofL Health Brown Cancer Center's Mobile Mammography Unit comes in. The van, which is a medical office on wheels, offers screenings that last around 15 to 20 minutes.

“It's 3D, just like you would get it if you're in a hospital," Temple said. "You're getting the latest equipment in order to do your mammograms."

Temple said the goal is to ensure women get screened for breast cancer, no matter what, getting rid of any hurdles or excuses that could arise.

“The UofL Health Brown Cancer Center, they have a special branch for women who can't afford or don't have transportation that during the week," she said. "If they call the Brown Cancer Center, they can provide transportation to bring them either to the Brown Cancer Center or any of the family health centers in order to get their mammogram."

The van is bringing health care to the community's doorstep, from community centers to churches to businesses.

“We really try to spread it out across Jefferson County, but we also take this mobile unit to Bullitt County," Temple said. "We take it to Shelby County. We're going to Trimble County; next month, in July, it even goes to LaRue County for a special screening."

Temple added each patient who gets screened will also receive education about what they can do to reduce their risks getting cancer and other different cancer screenings. Visit UofL Health's website for a schedule of appearances.
