The $1.18 billion Buffalo Public School budget was passed Wednesday, but not without some fireworks.
During their budget meeting Wednesday night, one board member said threats were made not to pass the budget, adding that the school board is divided. That showed in the result, as the budget passed with a 5-3 vote.
Some board members, in part, said the budget would not represent the most vulnerable students in the city. There are also concerns transferring students and teachers once planned school closures begin after the next school year.
The board did not address the independent investigation into allegations that came to light following a podcast where a Buffalo Police detective, Richard Hy, accused Buffalo Public Schools and Buffalo Police Department officials of covering up and obstructing investigations of sexual assaults, abductions and other crimes that allegedly happened on school property.
However, an attorney has been retained by at least a dozen people tied to allegations involving BPS.
