COLUMBUS, Ohio — Nine-year-old Ruby Brill is a diehard Columbus Crew fan.
“My favorite sport is soccer. I play, and I love Crew games,” Brill said.
It’s why she hardly ever misses a game.
“I think it’s just really fun, and the experience is really good,” Brill said.
So good that Brill’s family decided it was time to get season tickets.
“Now she does not miss a game," said Amy Brill, Ruby’s mom. "We watch every game on the TV if they’re not here. She knows more than I do at this point."
“I like Patrick Schulte, AZ, Russel-Rowe, Rossi,” Ruby Brill said.
But this Saturday’s matchup against Inter Miami isn’t like a regular home game. The Crew will be playing in Huntington Bank Stadium in Cleveland. Many fans are upset about it being two hours away.
“I was not so happy. I’m not actually going to the game. We have four tickets, and we sold two of them because I have three other children at home and for me to get a babysitter for that long was really difficult,” said Amy Brill.
“I wish my mom could go, but she has to stay and watch my siblings,” said Ruby Brill.
A spokesperson for the Crew said: “The Columbus Crew-Inter Miami match at Huntington Bank Field is an incredible opportunity for the Crew and our supporters as it allows us collectively to grow the game of soccer and elevate our Club throughout Ohio.”
The Crew also added that, since it’s not as convenient for everyone, they’re providing some special benefits.
But for fans like Brill, she said enticing them with food vouchers and special perks isn’t as good as keeping the game local.
“I get that Cleveland is a bigger space and has more major league teams and stuff like that, but I don’t know just stay local to your roots and stay here. I know a lot of people are not happy and the inconvenience of driving all the way to Cleveland and come back in the same day it’s a lot,” said Amy Brill.
A Crew spokesperson said that the Club expects Saturday’s match at Huntington Bank Field to be played in front of a sold-out crowd.
