Chautauqua County officials say two men have survived a plane crash at Jamestown Regional Airport around 10:30 a.m. Monday.

They say a small jet that was en route to Florida was set to make a pit stop in Jamestown. Airport personnel noticed communication stop between them and the pilot, so they immediately prepared for a crash landing. It is believed the aircraft lost power.

The pilot did manage to land the aircraft, skidding across the runway.

Shannon Fischer, manager of airports, Chautauqua County, said the pilot is a tenant of the Jamestown airport and is well-known in the area. He walked away from the scene but requested to be taken to ECMC by helicopter.

The second person in the aircraft also walked away from the crash. He went to UPMC Chautauqua to be evaluated.

“We haven’t done a full investigation yet but I mean there’s definitely oil out there. There was a fire,” said Fischer. “They skidded quite a ways across the runway so you know we’ll have to assess the damage after the cleanup is done.”

Officials credited the pilot’s skills and emergency response, saying this could have been a whole lot worse.

The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating.
