Today's Big Stories

1. LAPD sergeant, other man killed in crash on 405; all southbound lanes reopened

A veteran Los Angeles police sergeant and a motorist in his 30s whose truck broke down were killed early Monday when the sergeant stopped on the southbound San Diego (405) Freeway to assist the man and both were struck by another vehicle.

The deadly multi-vehicle crash shut down the southbound San Diego (405) Freeway in the Brentwood area for the duration of the morning rush hour.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass identified the sergeant as Shiou Deng, 53, a 27-year Los Angeles Police Department veteran.

"The men and women of LAPD put their lives on the line for Angelenos each and every day," Bass said. "Sgt. Deng served LA for more than 25 years. His last act was one of service — putting the safety and wellbeing of others above all else. ... My thoughts are with Sgt. Deng's family during this devastating time."

The crash was reported to the California Highway Patrol at 1:58 a.m. on the southbound San Diego Freeway just north of Moraga Drive where a silver truck was blocking the HOV lane.

2. LA scores big in new round of California film tax credits

More than half of 48 new film projects awarded California tax credits are expected to shoot in the Los Angeles area, with the full slate projected to generate $664 million in production spending statewide, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Monday.

The governor said that 43 of these projects are independent films. Altogether, the films are expected to hire 6,515 cast and crew members, as well as 32,000 background performers (measured in days worked), across 1,346 total film days.

While more than half of the projects are set to film in the LA area, the remaining projects will shoot in other parts of California, including Ventura County, San Francisco and the Bay Area, El Dorado and Placer counties, San Bernardino and Riverside counties, as well as Bakersfield, Half Moon Bay and Costa Mesa.

This is the ninth allocation in the 2024-25 fiscal year that tax credits have been awarded to a slate of film projects in California, according to the governor's office.

"This industry is core to California's creative economy and keeping production at home is more important than ever," Colleen Bell, director of the California Film Commission, said in a statement.

"This round of tax credits shows our commitment to supporting both indie and studio productions while spreading the economic benefits of filming across the state."

3. How to stay safe during extreme heat

Now that summer is here, dangerous heat and humidity will be more common over the next couple months.

If you're experiencing extreme heat, it's important to recognize the signs of heat illnesses and know how to stay safe.

There are many symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and it's important to recognize the signs before going outside.

If you or someone you know is ever experiencing any of these symptoms, focus on immediate cooling and hydration.

There are other factors that can affect your body in the heat, including if the heat is dry or humid. When humidity is high, your sweat can't evaporate quickly, preventing your body from cooling down.

4. Trump says Iran and Israel to have a phased-in ceasefire over 24 hours

President Donald Trump said Monday on social media that Israel and Iran have agreed to a "complete and total ceasefire" to be phased in over 24 hours.

The U.S. president said on Truth Social that the ceasefire would bring an "Official END" to the war, a major change in the hostilities that follows a U.S. strike over the weekend on three Iranian nuclear sites.

"On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, 'THE 12 DAY WAR,'" Trump posted.
