VAN NUYS, Calif. — Four people who allegedly used homemade spike-strips in an effort to disable vehicles involving a federal immigration enforcement action in Van Nuys were arrested Tuesday.
According to U.S. Border Patrol Chief Patrol Agent Gregory Bovino, the suspects "attempted to impede & obstruct our efforts, using improvised devices aimed at disabling our vehicles."
Bovino posted photos of the devices, which appeared to be either metal or rubber strips with protruding large nails. One photo shows the device embedded in a vehicle tire.
Bovino initially said three suspects were arrested, then later said a fourth person had been taken into custody.
The names of the people arrested were not released, but Bovino said all would face felony charges.
In a statement to Spectrum News, a DHS spokesperson said:
“DHS and its components continue to enforce the law every day in greater Los Angeles even in the face of danger.
On July 8, 2025, U.S. Border Patrol conducted a target immigration enforcement operation in Van Nuys, California. During the operation, four U.S. citizens placed improvised tire deflation devices on the road and punctured a Border Patrol vehicle’s tire. Agents were able to identify the suspects and placed them under arrest for obstructing law enforcement. During the arrest, one individual assaulted a Border Patrol agent and was subsequently arrested for assaulting federal law enforcement.
Our officers are facing a surge in assaults and attacks against them as they put their lives on the line to enforce our nations laws. Secretary Noem has been clear: If you obstruct or assault our law enforcement, you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
