The Ontario County Humane Society says a parvovirus outbreak at its shelter in Hopewell has killed six dogs. The shelter is currently closed as a precaution.

Officials say the outbreak stems from a cruelty case out of Geneva. They also say they are investigating additional charges in the case.

Parvo is a highly contagious virus, especially for puppies and kittens.

The humane society says 48 dogs are being housed at the shelter right now and there have been no new positive cases found this week.

The shelter is set to reopen on Thursday at 10 a.m.
