Investigators say fireworks are to blame for a fire that destroyed two homes in Schenectady.

"Careless discarding" of a used firework accidentally set fire to a home on Avenue A around 11 p.m. Friday, according to authorities. It then spread between two multi-family buildings.

As a result, 12 people were displaced. One suffered burns.

Both homes were demolished due to the extent of the damage.

Fireworks were also to blame for causing a house fire in Syracuse on the Fourth of July, according to police, and a man was killed following an accident involving fireworks in Delaware County.
