Degary Burbridge, 19, and Kiara Nettles, 19, were indicted on charges of involuntary manslaughter, reckless homicide and child endangering.

Pillich said on May 16, the couple left the child alone in the bathroom, placed in a baby bathtub fill with water. Pillich said a "third party" asked about the child, which prompted the couple to check on the baby.

The couple found the infant face down and unresponsive in the bathtub, and the child had drowned. Cincinnati Fire Department said it had responded to a call at approximately 10 p.m. at the 1600 block of Dewey Avenue for reports on the unresponsive child.

"There is absolutely no justification for leaving an infant unattended near water — under any circumstances," Pillich said. "This child's death was not just a tragedy; it was entirely preventable and should never have happened."

If convicted, the two face up to 17 years in prison each.
