Brooklyn paid homage to America's favorite pastime by heading out to the ballpark
The Prospect Park Alliance hosted an 1860’s themed baseball game yesterday with the Brooklyn Atlantics. The team brought with them old school rules to the field to show the fans what the game was like back when Prospect Park first opened. The team outfitted themselves in historical uniforms and used gear from from the day.
Back then, they say players did not use gloves, because the old baseballs have more padding under the leather. Another difference, foul balls didn't count towards strikes. During the game the umpire, dressed in a top hat, spoke about the history of the game with the crowd.
Brooklyn Atlantics' team captain Dean Emma says "we love to play for the love of the game and we love to educate the public on how the game was in its infancy versus how they view it on tv today.”
