There’s legislation being considered Albany that aims to protect city EMT’s.
The bill is named after FDNY EMS Captain Allison Russo. She was stabbed more than 20 times and killed while she was on duty. The unprovoked attacked in Astoria happened in 2022.
The man who attacked her has been found guilty of second-degree murder and is set to be sentenced later this month.
But many have raised the question of why EMS workers don’t have greater protections on the job. Specifically, the union says the bill would prevent medical emergency responders from going to scenes without adequate staffing to keep them protected.
Vincent Variale, president of the city’s Uniformed EMS Officers Union, joined “News All Day” on Wednesday to discuss why the legislation is important.
