HUNGINTON BEACH, Calif. — The American Cancer Society estimates there will be about 100,640 new melanoma diagnoses this year.

Dr. Steven Wang, board-certified dermatologist and Mohs microscopic surgeon, practices at Hoag in Orange County. He says 10-15% of all skin cancer is found on the scalp, an area he says most people don’t think about using sunscreen on.

Wang says scalp cancer tends to be “a little more aggressive and higher risk of developing metastasis, meaning spread to other part of the body.” He also says the scalp tends to bleed more during surgeries because of its vascular nature.

Wang says surgery and skin biopsies on the head can be avoided with more attention to protecting the head. So for the last few years, he worked on inventing a product that styles your hair, boosts your hair health and, most importantly, offers SP4 40 protection without the greasy feel of sunscreen. He says profit wasn’t his motivation to make the product — it was prevention of cancer.
