A Canadian man died after the vessel he was on ran aground at a Maine island, officials said.

Kent Smith, 72, of Nova Scotia was sailing with two New Hampshire residents when their 40-foot sailboat ran aground near Cape Ann Ledge on the southern end of Isle au Haut early Monday morning, according to the Department of Marine Resources.

Robert and Sandra Comeau of New Hampshire called 911 at around 3 a.m. after their sailboat began to break apart on the rocks, the DMR stated.

The Comeaus reported that the trio had been in the water for over an hour, according to DMR. All three wore life jackets.

“The Comeaus reported that they located Mr. Smith's body in the water after the boat broke apart, and they were able to pull him to shore where he was recovered by Marine Patrol at approximately 5 a.m.,” the DMR stated.

The Comeaus were examined and released in Stonington.

Smith's body was transported to Stonington and will be examined at an Ellsworth funeral home by the office of the chief medical examiner.
